A recent report that lists all risk factors and "protective" factors for breast cancer states that a single glass of alcohol per day is enough to increase the risk of breast cancer, both before and after menopause.
Breast cancer is a multifactorial disease, which means that several factors affect the risk of breast cancer. These are risk factors that can be "external", linked to the environment and to lifestyles or "internal", that is to say constitutive of individuals (age, sex, family history). As far as lifestyle is concerned, it is proven that tobacco, poor diet and alcohol have an important influence.
The National Cancer Institute considers that 17% of breast cancers are due to alcohol consumption in France. An effect that depends mainly on the amount of alcohol supplied and not the type of drink. A recent study by the American Cancer Research Institute (AICR) and the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) provides more information on this subject, as it states that even one glass of alcohol per day Increases the risk of breast cancer.
The situation is the same, whether it is a glass of wine or another liquor. The report also found that vigorous exercise, such as running or cycling, decreases the risk of breast cancer before and after menopause. Findings confirm earlier studies that moderate exercise decreases the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer, the most common type of breast cancer.

Maintaining a Form Weight

"With this comprehensive and up-to-date report, the evidence is clear: having a physically active lifestyle, maintaining a healthy weight throughout life and limiting alcohol are recommendations that all women can follow to reduce Their risks, "explains Professor Anne McTiernan, lead author of the report. The paper analyzes 119 studies, including data on 12 million women, including 260,000 cases of breast cancer.
His findings reveal that a small glass of wine or beer per day (about 10 grams of alcohol) increases the risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer by 5% and the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer by 9%. Other risk factors mentioned include overweight and obesity, particularly for postmenopausal cancer. "One in three breast cancer cases in the United States could be avoided if women did not drink, were physically active and maintained a healthy body weight," said the AICR.
Pre-menopausal women with vigorous physical activity had a 17% lower risk of developing breast cancer, and 10% of postmenopausal women compared to the least active women. For a more moderate physical activity such as walking or gardening, the risk reduction is estimated at 13%. "Whatever your level of physical activity, try to push a little, either a longer or a little more difficult," the authors explain.
They conclude: "make simple food changes, prefer vegetables such as carrots, peppers and green salad, and if you consume alcohol, stick to a drink or less. No guarantees in terms of cancer but you can do something to reduce your risk, "the authors conclude. According to the Inca, alcohol is responsible for 10% of cancer deaths in France, making it the second most preventable cause of cancer mortality after smoking.
